Bringing healthcare close to home
It’s time to take care of our own and bring healthcare close to home
We live on Bowen because of the lifestyle we can enjoy here – the silence of nature, the slowed down routines, the caring community. At the same time, our limited on-island and difficult to access off-island healthcare services puts each of us at risk. Our families and neighbours suffer from lack of immediate care and sufficient primary care when we need it. Too many of us with health issues delay seeking care because we don’t have enough services close to home.
A community health centre would go a long way to solving this critical problem. We would have more physicians, more hours of service, and a collaborative team of allied health professionals including nursing, social work, physiotherapy, and public programs. A health centre on Bowen would alleviate the stress and cost of traveling to the mainland when we are ill and injured and at our most vulnerable.
We have an immediate opportunity with a generous developer and anchor donor to build a community-owned health centre. It’s time to take care of our own and bring healthcare close to home.
